Climate change is increasing the need for high-quality, climate-resilient planting materials that can support sustainable agricultural production and preserve agrobiodiversity. To address this challenge, Armenia is introducing mandatory certification for all plant nurseries from 2027, helping to improve the quality, traceability and reliability of planting materials across the country.

The Center for Agricultural Research and Certification (CARC), the national authority responsible for nursery certification, is strengthening the capacities of its staff and independent inspectors (approbators) with support from the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia and PROGRESS programme.

Through its demonstration project, the PROGRESS programme supported Noratunk CJSC, one of Armenia's leading nurseries, in becoming one of the first certified nurseries in the country. As a recognised demonstration site, Noratunk also serves as a practical learning hub for other nurseries and certification specialists.

To strengthen collaboration between support institutions and the private sector, PROGRESS organised an on-the-job mentoring visit for CARC staff and approbators at the Noratunk nursery. Participants gained hands-on experience in modern rootstock production, grafting techniques and the identification of fruit and nut varieties.

By strengthening technical knowledge, promoting practical learning and fostering cooperation between certification bodies and nurseries, the initiative contributes to the wider adoption of climate-resilient planting materials and supports the long-term sustainability of Armenia's agricultural sector.
