Capacity-building webinar on risk management of pesticides in the Republic of Moldova

Capacity-building webinar on risk management of pesticides in the Republic of Moldova

Format: Online (Zoom)

Time: 14:00-17:30 CEST

The PROGRESS capacity-building webinar on risk management of pesticides in the Republic of Moldova (henceforth “Moldova”) was held on 28 September 2026. It was organised in response to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry’s (MAFI) prioritisation of sustainable pesticide use under the project’s Policy Frameworks component (Output 1).

The event gathered approximately 70 participants, including representatives of the MAFI; Moldova’s National Food Safety Agency (ANSA), National Center for Animal, Plant Health and Food Safety (CNSAPSA), State Inspectorate for Technical Supervision (INTEHAGRO); the MoldovaFruct association; companies in the pesticide market; international organisations; and international pesticide experts from the UK. In addition, representatives of the Ministry of Economy of Armenia joined this event as the topic is also a priority for them under PROGRESS.

The webinar provided an overview of innovative technologies for pesticide application, including precision, aerial and drone-based, and the testing of pesticide application equipment. Examples from the EU and the UK were shared. The presentations and discussions underscored that effective pesticide risk management requires comprehensive regulation, risk assessments reflecting actual application patterns, reliable testing systems, trained operators and inspectors, and clear institutional responsibilities. It was also highlighted that regulatory frameworks need to adapt to the rapid pace of technological developments in pesticide application. For Moldova, the exchange provided practical input into ongoing legislative and institutional reforms.

A follow-up capacity-building training on strengthening pesticide governance, inspection and compliance systems is planned for Moldovan policy makers in Chișinău during 20-21 October 2026.
